"He's the world's nicest human being-and the funniest," executive producer Michael Schurtells told Entertainment Weekly, "We made a list of all the people that we wanted to have back, and he was high on the list, so we managed to snag him."

So what brings Bobby back to Pawnee three years after he was defeated in the campaign race for city council by Amy Poehler's Leslie Knope?

"Ben [Adam Scott] needs to fill a certain position in the town, and he thinks that Bobby might be a good candidate," Schur adds.

More: don't worry - Parks and Recreation is "guarenteed" to return for season six

His role as Bobby won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series.

Parks returns for its seventh and final season in January with the comedy jumping ahead three years from the season six finale. Knope is no running a branch of the National Parks Service out of Pawnee while raising triplets. Jon Hamm is one of Leslie's new hapless employees while Chris Pratt's Andy now has his own TV show.

Parks and Recreation's final season begins on Tuesday January 13 at 8pm on NBC.

Rudd is currently lending his voice to Evan Goldberg's animated comedy Sausage Party about - and we quote - "one sausage's quest to discover the truth about his existence." It co-features the voice of Jonah Hill, James Franco and - you guessed it - Seth Rogen.

More: Parks and Recreation will finish after season seven. Now go away and cry.
