Tapping into the vampire craze that has dominated cinema over the last decade is Only Lovers Left Alive – but this is no moody teenage drama; like Let The Right One In, Jim Jarmusch’s film - centred on two vampires who have been in love for centuries – puts an adult spin on the popular legend.

Tilda Swinton and Tom HiddlestonTilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston are dark, sexy vampires

The vampires – Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston – are decidedly human compared to their contemporary cinematic counterparts. Adam (Hiddleston) is a musician; depressed and tired of the human society in which he is integrated, reunites with his long-time lover (and by long time, we’re talking centuries) but their love is challenged by Eve’s (Swinton) younger sister, Ava (Mia Wasikowka).

“Vampires have never appeared as cool, cultured, or frankly, human, as they do in Jim Jarmusch’s romantic-comedy drama Only Lovers Left Alive,” say Vanity Fair of the film, which screened on Sept 5 at the Toronto Film Festival – a hot bed for film over the last week. It was also nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

The film was shot in Detriot, which despite its dilapidated state, is enjoying a rich vein of attention on the big screen. “It's empty, that's what it is,” said Hiddleston to the Huffington Post. “I found the people to be some of the most kindhearted, optimistic, energetic American people I've ever met. But the city is empty, in my experience. But I found it, this is the city that America's lost soul -- and it gave me a different view of American history.”

The reviews suggest Jarmusch and co have tapped into something special with Only Lovers Left Alive. Film.com call it “The next great midnight classic,” while Hitflix say “this feels different than anything Jarmusch has done before, there's just enough that's familiar that I think it fits beautifully into the body of work he's been building.” With a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so far, this could be turn out to be the seminal vampire flick of the decade, and you can bet there’ll be more to come.
