The Cult of Harry Styles: Why Are We Obsessed With One Direction's Main Man?

Harry Styles can do no wrong. He may have been eliminated early from The X Factor when he auditioned as a solo artist back in 2010, but Simon and his cronies saw Harry’s potential and brought him back along with four other teenage boys to form a boyband. Can you guess who they went on to become?

harry styles cult 1dHarry has gained a worldwide following

While they didn’t actually win The X Factor, One Direction have since topped a lot more charts and gained a lot more international success than the actual winner, Joe McElderry. But that’s not all they’ve gained. The 1D boys have formed a Bieleber-esque following of passionate and dedicated female fans around the globe, and none more so than Harry.

Harry has amassed an army of supporters and a little bit of a bad boy reputation to boot. While the other 1D boys are often photographed together or in Zayn’s case, with his Little Mix fiancee Perrie Edwards, Harry is often seen out and about without his band members and with a collection of celebrity mates we never knew he had. You’ll find Harry at the FROW (that’s the Front Row at fashion shows for those of you who aren’t obsessed with the runway) with actress Sienna Miller or hanging out in Las Vegas with Pixie Geldof and Alexa Chung.

Harry’s love life has definitely won some headlines, particularly since his relationship with TV presenter Caroline Flack, who is fifteen years older than the pop star. Fans were so outraged by their age gap that the One Direction magazine printed a ‘Caroline Flash Voodoo Doll‘, which encouraged readers to stick pins in a photograph of her. Harry has since gone on to have relationships with a string of famous women including American singer Taylor Swift, English supermodel Cara Delevingne and most recently model and Kardashian clan member, Kendall Jenner.

In 2013 Harry won the Male Hottie and Best Smile award at the Teen Choice Awards and the British Style Award at the British Fashion Awards. Along with the multiple number one’s he enjoys alongside his One Direction band mates, Harry looks set to rule the world. He’s even guest starred in Nickelodeon’s iCarly as well as the One Direction movie. Is there anything that this boy doesn’t do?

harry styles kendall jennerHarry has been linked romantically to Kendall Jenner

At Wednesday’s BRIT awards One Direction won awards for Best Video and Global Success, although for the latter award Harry had to rush on stage to join his bandmates as he claimed he was in the loo. It’s since surfaced that he may have actually been having a cheeky cig with good friend, Nick Grimshaw.

Harry wasn’t the only star of the night to get all caught up with Nick! For the time being, Harry looks set to go from strength to strength. His cheeky chappy ways and down-to-earth charisma are the ideal recipe for a superstar. 1D stars may get mad when people compare their idol to Mick Jagger, but when you think that Mick is still going strong 51 years after The Rolling Stones first started it’s not quite such a bad comparison, is it?

Why Going Solo Is The Best Thing For One Direction’s Harry Styles 4295433 News

All good things must come to an end someday, which means that One Direction is eventually breaking up. Sorry, I know, it’s a sore subject for me, too. They’ve consistently put out great pop albums year after year, so it’s not like they should break up, but being in a boy band with a bunch of other guys sharing your spotlight puts a damper on your own personal success, too. Why stick around and split the profits when you can be a bigger star all on your own?! For some pop acts like Emblem3, it doesn’t make a difference who leaves, because nobody is really going to care about whatever solo thing they do. But groups like The Wanted? Nathan Sykes is bound to get big with anything he does now that The Wanted is done.

Harry Styles Esprit ArenaHarry Styles is bound to be One Direction's biggest success

With One Direction, all five of those guys are going to do big things too, but nobody will reach a star status as big as Harry Styles will, because let’s face it: Harry Styles is the lead of One Direction. Every pop group has one, whether people want to believe it or not. Nathan was the lead of The Wanted, James Bourne was the lead of Busted, and Normani Hamilton is totally the lead of Fifth Harmony. It’s not insulting the other members, but the leads just have something that their bandmates don’t. For Styles, he’s clearly the most popular, and arguably even has the best pipes.

So with the massive success that One Direction has achieved over the past few years, what evidence is there that says Styles may be better off on his own, or is even planning on going solo at all? In an interview at Digital Spy last month, frontman of rock band Kodaline mentioned that he had written a song with Styles that may be saved for a solo record. However, a statement was issued from a rep of the group that said any writing the boys are doing is strictly for 1D only. Hmm. Well, back in March, there were reports of Styles linking up with John Legend to write a song for The X Factor winners Alex & Sierra, and just last year, a song containing only Harry’s vocals leaked, but reps confirmed that it was just another One Direction demo.

Next page: Why all of Harry's writing is good for his future

Whether he’s writing for himself or not, he’s clearly making a name for himself outside of 1D’s music. On Ariana Grande’s upcoming record, My Everything, Styles has a co-writing credit on ‘Just a Little Bit of Your Heart,’ and it’s going to be produced by duo Max Martin and Shellback. It’s going to be the first taste we get on what a possible Harry song could sound like, despite the fact that it’s going to be sung by Grande. The most important part here is that her upcoming album is expected to be huge, and this is a big stage for Styles to showcase potential he has as an outside writer. The best case scenario that everyone in Styles’ camp is hoping for is probably Robbie Williams #2, who gained success in his group Take That before blowing up while solo, and it’s definitely a possibility for Harry.

Harry Styles SingingHarry Styles will be contributing a song to Ariana Grande's new album

Now, official Harry solo music most likely isn’t going to come anytime soon, and he’s not leaving One Direction behind for it. The group just recently signed an enormous record deal that’s got them locked into two more studio albums and a greatest hits release. That first of two albums is expected to be out by the end of the year and should feature more writing from the guys than ever before. Liam Payne recently took to Instagram to say that he’s been up “writing a dance banger,” while Niall Horan was writing songs with McFly back in March. With all of the writing Styles has been doing, it isn’t clear whether the songs for other artists are in addition to the ones he’s doing for the group -- but whatever he’s doing is going to undoubtedly help perfect his craft when One Direction is history.

Niall Horan Pleads With Rowdy 1D Fans After Getting Injured In Concert 4260124 News

One Direction’s Niall Horan reached out to fans on Twitter yesterday with a very important plea – stop throwing things onstage. The concept, which may be obvious to some, was clearly unfamiliar to attendees at 1D’s gig in Amsterdam on June 25, during which the 1D guys got pelted with a number of objects thrown by fans. Niall, who went through unspecified “major knee surgery” back in January, is still recovering.

Niall Horan
Love hurts sometimes, especially if you're an international pop star.

He made sure to keep his tone as pleasant as a boy band singer has to be, but still told off the rowdy fans – in his own way.

He wrote: ''Amsterdam thank you for a great couple of shows! Appreciate you coming.

''Also guys! Can you limit what gets thrown on stage please! Coz somethin thrown at me tonight! Hit my knee! A lot of pain from it!

''Never wana sound like I'm complaining! But only having my operation 5 months ago, I still get a bit of pain and I'm very scared about it. (sic)''

Because of his previous injury, Niall’s may gave been the most extreme case, but he wasn’t the only one getting pelted with flying pieces of fan love. Harry Styles reportedly got hit in the face with an unidentified flying object of the non-extraterrestrial kind. It’s dangerous business, being a pop star nowadays.

One Direction's Drug Scandal: Is Smoking Marijuana Considered Shocking Anymore? 4229044 News

Being caught with a joint is really nothing new in the world of pop, especially amongst those aggressively seeking a change of image that will subsequently add a semblance of ‘edge’ to their persona. For child stars especially, in attempts to free themselves from their enforced clean-cut youth and iconic childhood roles, to indulge in the smoking of marijuana is the go-to method of both distancing oneself from the past and declaring oneself as a fully independent adult.

One Direction
The group have come under fire from the tabloids for Zayn and Louis' actions.

The celebrity world abounds with examples of such exploits. Remember the media storm over Justin Bieber’s incident with a “suspicious cigarette” or Miley Cyrus’ bong exploits, which have now evolved into her free and consistent utilization of marijuana symbolism? The celebrity media loves a scandal more than a Republican loves his right to bear firearms, but whilst the current One Direction drug ‘scandal’ has rather predictably been plastered all over the tabloid’s front pages, the majority of the public greets it with a collective shrug of the shoulders. They are, after all, adolescents- the prime age for indulging in experimentation with illicit substances and activities. Most adults will have indulged in similar instances of experimentation with an array substances at a similar age to these patchy-bearded pop stars. In terms of the pop world, this particular act has been seen many times before; so many times, in fact, that the whole ‘rebellion’ phase is part and parcel of the child actor discourse. Some take it just a little too far, and the ensuing descent into drugs has unfortunately claimed the lives of many of Hollywood’s exploited youngsters.

More: Simon Cowell Defends One Direction Following 'Dope Smoking' Incident

What’s more, such an incident has become a ubiquitous symbol of rebellion that the whole One Direction drugs scandal could easily be seen through cynical eyes as more than a little contrived. Simon Cowell’s PR will have watched with extremely beady eyes as Miley Cyrus’ career exploded, despite her very public flaunting of marijuana usage, which far from damaging the singer’s reputation has bolstered it exponentially. Such a once-shocking act has now become just a facet of her pseudo-rebellion against her childhood, a carefully crafted attempt at controversy that although tasteless and trite, has led her to becoming one of the greatest pop stars in the world.

Yet for One Direction, a profile boost is hardly needed. They are already able to sell out stadiums almost on a whim, their fan base comprising of every other girl between the ages of 10-18, plus a few mums of course. Such is the size of their gargantuan following that shedding a few fans from the flock will not harm the band in the slightest, with many more viewing the group from a different perspective now that they are supposedly dabbling in illegal practices. Even so, there has been a reported 79 per cent surge of tickets being listed on re-sale site Viagogo since the incident and many of their younger fans have clearly been perturbed by the group’s frivolities. Now slipping into their twenties, I imagine the One Direction lads will be seeking to mature their image in much the same way as almost every other youngster who has grown up under public scrutiny- from Mark Wahlberg to Macaulay Culkin.

One Direction
Viagogo has reported a surge in tickets for the group's upcoming UK tour being relisted.

For the youth of today, smoking weed is just another rite of passage, following on from the first tentative steps into alcohol as well as fumbling sexual exploits. Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson’s indulgence with marijuana, which is actually legal in Peru in small quantities, should be seen as such. Smoking weed is a widely practiced past time, an act only scandalous to the most conservative of Daily Telegraph readers.

Rappers and contemporary pop cultural icons such as Snoop Dogg, Wiz Kalifa and Lil’ Wayne have ingrained their lifestyles and image with marijuana usage, whilst t-shirts and other garments emblazoned with symbols referring to marijuana are abundant throughout high street outfitters. The reaction to the exploits of the two One Direction members, then, has also gone to show how out of step much of the UK’s press is with the rituals amongst Britain’s younger generations and the shifting attitudes towards drugs they exude. But when the first images of a One Direction member burying his face in a mountain of cocaine arrive on the internet, it will be a very different story indeed.

First Weed, Now Racial Slurs: Louis Tomlinson In Hot Water Over N-Word Use 4219616 News

Louis Tomlinson of One Direction has come under fire for not only sharing a marijuana joint with fellow band member Zayn Malik but also using a shortened version of the N-word in the same leaked video. The new clip has sent shockwaves through One Direction's young fanbase as it presents a very different image to that of the usually squeaky clean singers.

Filmed in the car on the way to a recent concert in Peru, the clip shows Zayn and Louis joking around with members of their crew and passing around a joint which is referred to as "Mary Jane," a euphemism for weed. Feathers have also been ruffled by Louis' flippant attitude towards police that they pass and is heard referring to the law enforcers as the "po po."

Tomlinson is heard seeming to say "It's green only, n**" and blowing spoke whilst sharing the joint with the other passengers. A motorcycle police officer drives past and Louis says: "He's having a look. He's thinking 'I'm sure I can smell an illegal substance in there'. And he's hit the nail on the head."

The drug use was the first aspect of the video that hit headlines but fans appear to have decided that Louis' use of the derogatory racial language is unforgivable. Alongside dismayed tweets, several fans have uploaded images of themselves burning their tickets for upcoming 1D concerts as the popular boyband embark on a series of UK shows and prepare for a mammoth US tour.

As well as an angry online backlash from disappointed fans, the pair have also faced criticism from John Whittingdale, chairman of the Commons culture, media and sport select committee, who told the Daily Mail: "They are adored by many people and they have a responsibility to set an example."

Other band members Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan are believed to have been travelling in different cars and were not seen in the video. However, Styles has allegedly hit out at his careless band members and even chose to fly in a separate private jet to perform in Sunderland last night. At the show there was no mention of the incident as the band thanked the 52,000 fans present for their support.

A spokesman for the band previously said: "This matter is in the hands of our lawyers" and declined to provide any further statement on the matter.

Harry Styles Pulls Down Piers Morgan's Pants At Soccer Game 4216034 News

One Direction star Harry Styles embarrassed British newsman Piers Morgan by pulling down his shorts during a charity soccer game.

The What Makes You Beautiful hitmaker was joined by his bandmates Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, who acted as team manager, at the celebrity soccer tournament in Leicester, England on Monday (26May14).

Morgan, Boyzone singer Ronan Keating and British comedian James Corden also took part in the match alongside former professional players.

A short video has since emerged showing Styles running up behind Morgan and pulling his shorts down in front of the stadium crowd. Morgan swiftly hauls them back up and the singer runs off cheering.

The former talk show host took the prank in good spirits, writing on Twitter.com, "So (Harry Styles) pulled my shorts down mid-game. I believe this got the biggest scream of the day."

He later posted the clip, adding, "(I) can't work out if this is a career high or low?"

Despite the mishap, rival team manager Morgan ended the game on a high as his soccer side emerged victorious following a penalty shootout against Horan's players.

The match, which was organised by Horan, raised money for autism charities Irish Autism Action and U.K. Hearts And Minds Challenge.

Harry Styles to have family on tour 4172822 News

Harry Styles has a rota of friends and family to join him on tour.

The One Direction hunk - whose group kicked off their 'Where We Are' concerts in Colombia last week - will be on the road until October and wants to avoid homesickness, so he and his bandmates are planning to have as many visitors as possible across the globe.

A source said: ''The boys got so homesick last time and wanted to make sure they had friends and family with them during this tour.

''They find hotel rooms so lonely.

''Harry has divided up dates between his parents, sister and friends so that he isn't by himself for much of the tour. Harry's dad Des and mum Anne will fly out separately during the American leg.''

Harry's father Des has already revealed when he will be going on the road with the 'Little Things' stars.

He tweeted: ''We're doing Manchester, London, Dublin, Milan, Madrid and the US leg from Nashville to Dallas.''

Meanwhile, Niall Horan has a group of friends who want to join him on tour, Zayn Malik will try to fit in visits with fiancée Perrie Edwards as often as possible, and Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne will spend much of their time with girlfriends Eleanor Calder and Sophia Smith.

The source added to the Daily Star newspaper: ''Niall has a close-knit group of mates from Ireland and he wants to them to be there.

''Louis and Liam also hope to have their girlfriends travelling with them for most of the time. And Zayn will see his fiancée as much as possible.

''They all just want a bit of home with them.''

Tristan Evans wants Kendall Jenner date 4162928 News

The Vamps' Tristan Evans wants to date Kendall Jenner.

The 'Wildcard' drummer thinks One Direction hunk Harry Styles - who has previously dated stars including Caroline Flack, Taylor Swift and Daisy Lowe - has good taste in women and is particularly taken with the 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians' star.

When asked if he would consider dating one of Harry's exes, he exclusively told BANG Showbiz: ''I like Kendall, she's quite good looking.''

However, Tristan wasn't so enthusiastic about dating Justin Bieber's ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, over fear it would be ''awkward'' if he ever met the 'Confident' singer.

He added: ''Selena Gomez? I'm a Justin fan, that'd be a bit awkward but she is beautiful and we played a couple of shows with her so. She's very nice.''

The musician hasn't dated anyone in the public eye, but insists he wouldn't be shy about asking out a celebrity.

He added: ''[Have I dated a celebrity?] To my memory, No. I would definitely have the genitals to ask someone out if they were a celebrity or not a celebrity but it's all about picking the right person.''

Meanwhile, The Vamps are set to headline their first nationwide tour later this year.

Harry Styles is Victim Of James Corden Phone Prank - This Time He Was Ready 4158169 News

Styles wasn't about to get shown up for his gullibility again. Harry Styles has become yet another victim-of-choice for a phone prankster after having made headlines with his embarrassingly gullible display at the hands of The 1975's Matt Healy and Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw. This time, Styles was chosen as the target for James Corden's hilarious Send-To-All prank on The Michael McIntyre Chat Show on Monday (14th April).

Harry Styles Was Poised For A Witty Retort When James Corden Prank Texted Him.

The send-to-all game involved James sending a cheeky text to everyone on his contacts list to see who responded. The 32 year-old entertainer wrote "Me and you, lapdancing. Are you in or out? Come on, let's do this." Having learned his lesson from last month's blunder, the One Direction singer wasn't taking any chances and instead replied "Great, but what is it with you and lapdancing? What happened the last time we did that wasn't pretty."

Corden's Prank Was Quickly Turned On Himself As It Emerged That Harry Was In On The Game.

Further turning the joke on Corden, Styles brought the comedian's 3 year-old son, Max, into the prank before he let on that he was in on the game. "Maybe we shouldn't bring Max this time (are you playing send-to-all with Michael McIntyre?)."

Last month on Grimshaw's breakfast show, Harry agreed to hand over £5,000 to Matt Healy from boy band The 1975, despite having only met on a few occasions. Taking part in the show's "Call or Delete" game, Healy phones up his fellow singer, explaining "Sorry I've never rung you before now, I was just wondering, this is going to sound ridiculous, I need £5,000 and I'm in Chalk Farm, I know it sounds ridiculous but it is a serious situation, I'm in a phone booth and a bloke is pointing to a picture of Mark Owen, it's actually quite threatening."

Styles Was Mocked For Agreeing To Give The 1975's Matt Healy £5,000 In Another Prank.

A seemingly calm Harry responded "OK, well we're in Bristol. But let me go and I'll get my assistant to call you and she'll sort it out." Of course, the One Direction star was quickly mocked for his willingness to trust someone he barely knew, but it also shows that the 21 year-old is a lot more generous that he has previously been given credit for.

Kodaline and Harry Styles write 'unrequited love' song 4142645 News

Kodaline and Harry Styles have written a song about ''unrequited love''.

The Irish rock band have teamed up with the One Direction hunk for a secret romantic song, but they admit they don't know whether it will ever be released.

Guitarist Mark Prendergrast told BANG Showbiz: ''Harry Styles came to two of our shows and he's a big fan and we ended up going to the studio and writing a song together.

''He's a really good lad. Very funny and a very good writer and singer. It was an unrequited love song but we're not sure what we're doing with it yet, but it's there.''

The 'High Hopes' hit makers - consisting also of Steve Garrigan, Jason Boland and Vincent May - can also count Nicole Scherzinger as a fan after she turned up to a show they did in Los Angeles.

Mark explained: ''We did a show in LA and we're in this big old theatre and it was a mad show. Nicole Scherzinger came along. We heard she might be coming and we were like, 'No, she's not coming'. Then I could see her from the stage and I was like, 'Jesus, there she is'.

''Apparently she's a huge fan, she emailed our manager asking for tickets and she listens to the album a lot. And we went to a friend's house after and she said she listens to our songs in the gym and in the bath tub.''

Niall Horan enjoys night out with Brian McFadden 4104607 News

Niall Horan enjoyed a night out with Brian McFadden in London on Saturday (08.03.14).

The 20-year-old One Direction star and the 33-year-old former Westlife singer decided to head out for a night on the town after watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship at the O2 Arena on Saturday evening (08.03.14), and were spotted partying at east London's Shoreditch House.

A source said: ''The boys were in high spirits and joking and laughing together about which one was the biggest lightweight.

''Brian then suggested they order tequila and before we knew it, they were both downing the shots. They were getting on so well. After a few more tequilas, Niall got on the decks and showed off his DJ skills.''

The 'Story of My Life' hitmaker's bandmates - Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne - were absent from the night out, but Niall, who was put together with the boys on the 'X Factor', appeared to enjoy catching up with his fellow Irishman.

The source told the Daily Star newspaper: ''Niall and Brian must have racked up a hefty bill as they weren't holding back with ordering the drinks.

''In fact they must have been pretty tipsy by the end of the night, as they almost forgot to settle their bar tab. They were mortified when they realised, but the bar staff found it funny.''
