Yet Another Boon for Netflix: This Time It’s Disney's Marvel

Walter White won’t be the only anti-hero on Netflix now, and you can add some super ones in the mix too, as the streaming giant has struck a deal with Disney over several new live action series featuring an array of Marvel characters.

NetflixNetflix are continually upping their content levels

First question any fan will ask is: who’s getting their own series? Well we can tell you, it’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. They’ll get their own 13-episode story arc, and that’ll be followed by a Defenders miniseries.

"This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel's brand, content and characters across all platforms of story telling," said Alan Fine, president of Marvel Entertainment. (L.A Times)

Both cable channels and streaming services alike were after this deal, making competition extremely tough. But it’s testament to Netflix’s bargaining power – bolstered by the success of original, only-streamed content like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black – that they managed to secure the contract above any other companies.

"Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels," said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, who was quick to point out that Iron Man and Marvel's The Avengers are two of the streaming service's most popular content choices around the globe.

Disney bought Marvel back in 2009 for $4 billion with a view to days like these; days that represent Marvel’s biggest push into television – over films – in the history of the brand. Having tapped in to something golden with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, ABC Studios will co-produce the content on Netflix alongside Marvel.

It’s somewhat of a golden age for the franchise, with Thor: The Dark World widely regarded to be one of the better films of their ‘second phase’, and X-Men: Days of Future Past and a new Avengers film on the way.
