Just Plain Old Kesha? Other Music Stars Who Changed Their Name

Kesha has dropped the $ from her name, apparently in a bid to start afresh since leaving rehab. Kesha had checked into the Timberline Knolls Treatment Center to receive treatment for eating disorders and has announced to her fans on Twitter that she is “Feeling healthy & working on tons of new music”.

We totally understand that even one minor change can make you feel as though you have a new lease of life. We wonder if that’s the reason that these other musicians decided to change their names?

Sean Combs changes his name as often as most people change their underpants. Oh, alright, not that often. But since his career began, he’s been known as Puff Daddy, Puffy, P. Diddy and finally Diddy. We’re starting to wonder whether all of these name changes are actually some sort of complex word ladder that Diddy has been playing without us realising over the years.Who doesn’t start singing “Snoop Dawww-gyyy Daww-wggg” each time Snoop pops up on the television? He’ll always be Snoop Doggy Dogg to us, even though he dropped the ‘Doggy’ some time ago. In 2012, after a visit to Jamaica, Snoop converted to the Rastafari movement of which legendary reggae artist, Bob Marley belonged. He has since restyled himself as Snoop Lion. Because that’s way more rasta that Snoop Dogg.

Snoop Lion’s protege Lil’ Bow Wow dropped the “Lil’” when he stopped being so, well, lil’. He’s not the only pint sized rapper to ditch the epithet. Lil’ Romeo is now also know simply as Romeo. This pair are now in their mid-twenties so we get it that they probably don’t want to be seen as the babies of the rap world anymore!

Jay-Z is always going to be know as Jay-Z, but over the years he’s also styled himself as Jigga and HOVA. H-to-the-Izzo-V-to-the-IzzA...sorry, we got a little carried away there! Remember when Prince went through a stage of explaining that he wanted his name to be a love symbol instead? That one was pretty tough and ended up with everybody calling him “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince” rather than actually chanting “Love Symbol!” at his concerts. Fortunately, he’s now referred to as Prince again. It makes things so much simpler for all involved. Maybe these artist have all adapted their names to fit in more appropriately with the stage they feel they are at in their career, sort of how Salvador Dali transitioned through different movements in his. But more than likely it’s nothing like that at all. Why do you think musicians feel the need to change their names?
