"There were three or four attractions to the role (in 'Transcendence'), one being Johnny (Depp) himself," Freeman explained to TODAY's Savannah Guthrie and Carson Daly, Tuesday (April 15th).
"Always wanted to have a shot at working with him," Freeman continued.
Depp's character, Will Caster, is on the verge of discovering a technological breakthrough that could change the modern age as it is today, but a group who oppose technological advancements shoot him in the head.

"This is a question we should be pondering," Freeman said to Today of the movie's plot. "The question is, OK, so we can [use this technology], but how far should it go before we realize we're no longer in control of it?"
"It's not an easy thing to do, because in order to stop [technology] you've got to shut the world down," he continued.
Freeman's character is also a scientist as well as mentor to Caster, and he is joined by British actress Rebecca Hall who stars as Caster's wife, Evelyn.
'Transcendence' will be released on the 17th April in the USA and on the 25th April in the UK.
