Unofficial England World Cup Song #8576: Monty Python Chime In With Their Own

Monty Python’s cheeky reimagining of 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' is a playful ditty, sure to galvanise the nation’s spirit ahead of the World Cup in Brazil. This is probably the best unofficial World Cup song England has had. Sorry, Lily Allen.

Uploaded to YouTube, the lyrics include: “When you’re in the World Cup, And all your hopes are up, And everybody wants their team to win.” – “Then they go and let you down, And come slinking back to town, It’s time for this daft song to begin.”

The anthem will no doubt prove more popular than the official World Cup 2014 song - written by Gary Barlow and featuring vocals from the Take That singer and 20 other celebrities - which was dropped last week. The FA stated that it had no plans for the track, called Greatest Day, to be released as an official single.

Monty Python’s status as cult legends almost renders the world ‘unofficial’ as defunct. With such a strong following, it’s hard to see another song permeating the zeitgeist with the potency of this one, and its sharp, self-effacing satire will surely strike a chord with England’s football lovers this summer.

It’s certainly better than Lily Allen’s garage-pop effort, which seemed half-baked in its execution; vague references to British culture – unwanted ones of binge drinking and the monarchy at that – were twinned with only one cast-iron football reference: Paul “Gazza” Gascoigne.

The England team landed in Brazil ahead of their opening game against Italy on Saturday, 14 June. They then face Uruguay five days later on 19 June before their last group game, the sure-to-be must-win tie against Costa Rica on 24 June.
