Comedian Mindy Kaling appeared on the front of fashion magazine Elle for its 'Women in Television' February issue.

But what was supposed to be a career high for the 34 year-old has been turned into a controversial debacle after her close-up face shot caused a stir on the internet.

The other three women, who feature on their own covers, are Zooey Deschanel, Amy Poehler and Allison Williams, and their snap-shots are a full body image.

Bloggers were speculating why the magazine chose to not feature a full body shot of Kaling, citing that they didn't want to use her curvy body figure.

'The Mindy Project' star made light of the negative backlash, and in an appearance the 'Late Show with David Letterman' on Friday night (Jan 10th), she spoke about her Elle cover in depth.

"I was, for the first time in my career, on the cover of a fashion magazine, which is such an awesome, nice thing," she said to David. "It felt great!"

Kaling also admitted when seeing the cover for the first time, she thought, "I look so, like beautiful. Wow, I've never looked better. I feel like I look like a movie star on it!"

Initially, the comedian was light-hearted about the public's reaction and in her own comedic style, Kalings tweeted, "I love my @ELLEmagazine cover. It made me feel glamorous & cool. And if anyone wants to see more of my body, go on thirteen dates with me."

Although many people online were trying to defend her, 'The Office' actress did think they went a bit too far.

"I didn't expect this reaction," she said. "There was a weird reaction, which was, 'Does Elle magazine think Mindy's not skinny enough to show her whole body, standing up from head to toe?'"

Kaling thought these comments implied that the public see her as an overweight person, which is more of an insult than an attempt at defending her.

"'What, Elle, you can't put her big, fat body on the magazine? Why? 'Cause she's just fat and gruesome? Why can't we look at her beautiful fat body?'" she added.

Elle are supporting their decision to use a close-up shot of Kaling, the mag released a statement which said, "Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic. We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue."
