Mark Millar on Kick-Ass 2: "It's A Real Take On Violence, You Feel Every Blow"

Mark Millar, the creator of the Kick-Ass comic book, has fired back at critics who claim his films are too violent though didn't necessarily deny the claims.

Hollywood comedy actor Jim Carrey - who plays a vigilante in the sequel - is boycotting promotional duties on the film saying he can no longer support the project following the Sandy Hook school massacre.

Kick Ass 2Is Kick Ass 2 Going To Be Too Violent?

During an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live's Richard Bacon, Millar rejected claims that his movie glamourises violence, arguing very much the opposite: "In many films you don't see the grieving or the pain but in Kick-Ass you feel every blow...It's a very real take on violence and it almost unglamourises it."

"Jim Carrey's character ironically is a born-again Christian who refuses to carry a gun because...he doesn't want to be a negative role model for children" added the writer.

The Glaswegian screenwriter called Carrey's decision "the biggest PR favour of all time," explaining that it inadvertently provided millions of dollars' worth of publicity.

"In a weird way, Jim Carrey did us the biggest PR favour of all time. Universal estimate that it's about $30million worth of publicity that we got out of him pulling out," he told the Scottish Sunday Record during a special screening of the movie in Glasgow, adding "I'm going to pull out of my next movie!"

In June, Carrey - an outspoken advocate for gun control - tweeted, "I did 'Kickass' a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence." The decision was criticised by several individuals involved with the movie, including 16-year-old actress Chloe Grace Moretz, "It's a movie," she told a reporter, "If you are going to believe and be affected by an action film, you shouldn't go to see 'Pocahontas' because you are going to think you are a Disney princess.

"If you are that easily swayed, you might see 'The Silence of the Lambs' and think you are a serial killer," she added.

John Leguizamo, who also appears in the movie, told Yahoo! Movies in July, "I love Jim, man. The dude's great; he's entitled to think whatever he's thinking.I just don't understand. When did you realize the movie was violent? I mean, didn't you see the first one? Didn't you read the script? I know you must have read the script! I don't understand."

Shortly after Carrey's remarks, Millar wrote a blog-post clearing up the level of violence in Kick-Ass 2. "Kick-Ass' avoids the usual bloodless body-count of most big summer pictures and focuses instead of the CONSEQUENCES of violence, whether it's the ramifications for friends and family or, as we saw in the first movie, Kick-Ass spending six months in hospital after his first street altercation," he said.

Kick-Ass 2 opens nationwide on Friday, August 16th 2013.
