London Fashion Week 2014: The Weird, Wacky and Wonderful

We've already celebratedthe return of Burberry this week, and it’s easy to get wrapped up in who’s front rowing at which shows and which designers are getting the Anna Wintour seal of approval, but London Fashion Week is about much more than that. In the true spirit of British eccentricity LFW is always responsible for some weird, wacky and downright wonderful moments.

Pam Hogg goes punk

British designer Pam Hogg can always been counted on to bring her unique flair to the catwalk. This time she took inspiration from political punks ‘Pussy Riot’ while working on her collection. Her collection included sheer onesies and plenty of metallics plus some very fetching headgear including a bobbled hat anda huge golden headress.

Topshop gets Unique

British high street giant Topshop continued their foray into the high fashion world with their Topshop Unique’ show. However the brand gave us one of the most talked about front rows as Anna Wintour rubbed shoulders with Kendall Jenner, Phillip Green and Lottie Moss, accompanied by big sister Kate of course. The collection was pretty impressive too, with a lot of oversized items and furs to keep warm through winter.

Noel Fielding clowns around

Comedian Noel Fielding made an excellent addition to Dutch designer’s Bas Koster’s show on Saturday. The Mighty Boosh star took part in ‘Clowns are People Too’ sporting clown makeup and wearing one of the designer’s unique red and orange creations. Fielding, who is no stranger to wearing some of the designers most outlandish creations called the experience ‘one of the greatest days of my life’ on twitter.

The first ‘smart skirt’

Fyodor Golan teamed up with Nokia to create the world’s first ever smart skirt for London Fashion Week. The interactive piece was constructed from Nokia Lumia phones, which displayed images to make it look like a real skirt. Whether or not this is the future of fashion remains to be seen, but our minds are officially blown by this one.

Henry Holland brings a full house

Slogan king Henry Holland never fails to grab attention and this LFW was no exception. With a star studded front row the designer showed off his latest collection featuring slogans such as ‘rich bitch’ and using taffeta and sequins to create a unique girly yet trashy affair.

The next wave of designers

Of course London Fashion Week also hosts Central Saint Martin’s graduates MA collections. Dublin designer Michael Power made sure his stood out, by adding some interesting ‘bucket style’ footwear. The former Vivienne Westwood intern took home the L'Oreal Professionnel Creative Award alongside fellow designer Ondrej Adame.

Peter Pilotto goes to extremes

Guests knew this would be an interesting show when the designer sent out hologram invitations, and he didn't disappoint. Mixing clashing patterns and fabrics and utilising colourful fur, Pilotto’s show mixed the extremes of the seasons to create an eyechatching visual feast on the runway.

Storm Troopers on guard!

Storm Troopers seem to get just about everywhere these days and London Fashion Week was no exception. Thea Bragazzi and Justin Thornton, better known as Preen took full on inspiration from Star Wars for their collection which included Darth Vader himself printed on shirts and a pair of storm troopers guarding models backstage.

Hunter makes a splash

Hunter pulled off a nice trick at showing just exactly what their wellies are good for, splashing about in the rain. The debut London Fashion week show from the famous brand had the model's splashing down a wet catwalk and it also included a magic trick from Dynamo. At the end of the show, the magician appeared to levitate and then make the models disappear, creating some real fashion week magic.

Sibling takes a tumble

It wouldn't be fashion week without a model falling, and this year it happened on the Sibling runway. The knitwear label, known for their unique jumpers, may have put one too many holes in their long knitted cardigans, as a model got her platform shoe caught and tripped. A speedy recovery was made however as she simply kicked off her shoe and carried on like a pro.
