In her perennial quest to push boundaries that often don’t need pushing, Lady GaGa let ‘vomit artist’, Millie Brown, do her thing all over her at SXSW festival on March 13. The singer foresaw the backlash, and now says she’s not surprised by people’s reactions.

"I guess we weren't completely surprised. Millie and I know that not everybody's going to love that performance," the 27-year-old singer told "Today" anchor Savannah Guthrie yesterday morning (March 21). "But we both really believe in artistic expression and strong identities," she continued.

"I support her and what she does. ARTPOP, my new album, is about bringing art and music together and the sprit of creative rebellion. For us, that performance was art in its purest form. But we totally understand that some people won't be into it."

One of Gaga’s biggest critics was Demi Lovato, who denounced the ‘vomit’ art as unsympathetic and said it glamourized eating disorders. "Sad ... As if we didn't have enough people glamorizing eat disorders already. Bottom line, it's not 'cool' or 'artsy' at all," she wrote on Twitter. "Would you let someone bring a needle and shoot up on you? Addiction is addiction," Lovato continued.

Brown explained to Elle magazine that she came up with the idea of "vomit art" because she "wanted to use my body to create a performance that was about the beauty from inside out. I came up with the idea of actually vomiting a rainbow using my body as a tool to create paintings. ... My performance is not a statement about eating disorders in any way. I think the whole bulimia thing -- it's important for people to know that I'm not trying to promote it."
