Kendrick Lamar Spits Fire At Drake (And Every Other Rapper) In BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher [Listen]

Kendrick Lamar was always going to walk away from the 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards as one of the main talking points. Up for 11 awards and eventually leaving with four wins, not to mention the fact that he played a live medley of some of his most notable tracks from the critically lauded Good Kid, m.a.a.d City, Kendrick was en route to being on the front page of Google News regardless.

Kendrick declares himself "King Kendrick" on the track

Ever since a preview of the cypher clip went viral last month, there were rumours that Kendrick takes on his 'Poetic Justice' collaborator with gusto, and when the rapper performed his verse in full at the BET Hip Hip Awards this turned out to be the case, only Drake wasn't alone in the take down. In his two-minute verse, part of a full-length Top Dawg Entertainment Crew cypher recorded for the show, Kendrick asserts his dominance over the other big rappers of today, declaring himself "King Kendrick" amongst the rest.

"Nothing's been the same since they dropped 'Control'/ And tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes," the Compton rapper begins his verse. "Your shit never penetrates/ Pin the tail on the donkey, boy you been a fake."

"I'm the master that masturbated on your favorite emcee," he goes on, sitting with his arms folded at the top of the pack, being given a huge round of applause from the audience with each venom-spiked line during the night's performance. "Hold up, wait a minute/ Your career ain't shit unless you got some Kendrick in it."

The supposed diss at Drake comes after his verse on the Big Sean track 'Control,' in which he name checks a plethora of rappers who he considers himself better than right now. After the track, and Kendrick's verse in particular, blew up, the Compton MC's seeming egotism provoked a mini-outrage - one that made Kendrick contemplate dumbing down his lyrics in future. At the time, he was forced to come out and say that he meant no one any disrespect, he was only asserting himself as the best, as is the usual in the hip-hop genre. His verse on the cypher was, again, the same thing; nothing personal against Drake and the rest. He's just better than you.

UK readers can watch The 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards on Friday, 18 October at 8pm on BET [Sky 187, Virgin 184 & Freesat 140].

Hopefully he won't have to go on record and explain himself again after his latest verse
