Katy Perry Talks New Album 'Prism', Russell Brand Divorce And Current Beau John Mayer
Katy Perry discusses 'Prism' as a personal reflection on her divorce from Russell Brand and current relationship with John Mayer.
Katy Perry released her new album 'Prism' last Friday (Oct 18th) and it provided the bouncy, catchy pop-songs the American singer is known for, but with hits like 'Roar' and 'Dark Horse' there is a personal underlying story of the 28 year-old, that is unveiled in several track.
Perry's new album 'Prism' takes a darker turn
The new album engages with Perry's divorce from British comedian Russell Brand, especially on the closing track 'By The Grace Of God' which depicts the post-breakup dark days.
Perry recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about her divorce featuring on 'Prism'. "Well, imagine what you go through," she states. "Imagine what happens when you go through a break up. We all go through break ups and we all get very depressed and desperate. The lyrics are very exact and autobiographical. That's how I write. But the one thing about those lyrics is you can hear me finding my strength throughout the song. It starts off really low and then I kind of stand up for myself and say, 'No!'"
The 'Fireworks' singer also compared her marital split to "getting punched in the face" in another interview with the UK's Sunday Times. "I'm not the kind of person who is always like, 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger,'" she said. "I was in bed for about two weeks. I was pretty f--ked, yes. It hurt a lot-I got a good knock."

Perry also described how it affected her mental state, "Unfortunately, although I had the outward self-identity, I didn't have the inner kind, I hadn't built that up. My self-worth was in someone else's hands which is never a good idea, because it can be taken from you at any time. And it was, and it was shattered."
The 'Teenage Dream' singer insists that the only song targeting her divorce is 'By The Grace Of God' and that her latest release 'Unconditionally' is inspired by her current boyfriend, singer-songwriter, John Mayer.
Perry seems very fond of Mayer, admitting she fancied the 36 year-old before they even began dating to W Magazine. "I actually am dating my crush," she said, "I had a crush on him for a long time."
'Prism' was released on October 18th 2013.
