Kanye West started his Yeezus tour with a bang. In fact with several bangs, as the carefully constructed spectacle featured a lot of pyrotechnics.
Kanye West has proven that he is a perfectionist, but this time he took it to the extreme. On the opening night of his Yeezus tour, at the Key Arena in Seattle. After more than 15 000 fans flooded the stadium, the show opened with a 40-minute set by Kendrick Lamar, MTV’s Rob Markman reports. Lamar kicked off the proceedings with "Money Trees" and ended with his hometown ode "Compton" – all tracks from his debut release, good kid, M.A.A.D. city. Even after the warmup act was done however, it would be another hour or so, before every piece of West’s complicated set design was in place and the concert was about to begin.
Kanye's tour is off to a roaring start.
The show included plenty of over the top details, because of course this is Mr West and it would be silly to expect anything less. According to Markman, there were plenty of flashing lights, flurries of snow, dancers, a red-eyed demon, a mountain, Jesus Christ and, of course, Kanye West, completing the not-so-subtle religious references.
And of course, there are plenty of comments on race and racism, which turned out to be surprisingly hilarious, especially in the already pumped up atmosphere. West performed tracks from Yeezus like “New Slaves” and “Mercy” but there were also some vintage hits like “Stronger” and of course, the thematically appropriate “Jesus Walks.” The whole event was a theatrical spectacle through and through and set a fine start to the Yeezus tour.
Even during the tour, 'Ye remains a dutiful boyfriend and father.
