Josh Hartnett Turned Down Spider-Man, Batman and Superman

Josh Hartnett is back. Sort of. The 35-year-old, who for a short time was probably the most in-demand actor in the world, traded in his guaranteed blockbusters for low-key indie flicks after admitting he couldn't deal with the fame.

"I was on the cover of every, magazine," Hartnett, told Details magazine in a new interview, "I couldn't really go anywhere. I didn't feel comfortable in my own skin. I was alone. I didn't trust anyone," the Pearl Harbor actor confessed, "I'm still finding my way through all that."

Hartnett also recalled which roles he turned down at the height of his fame.

"Spider-Man was something we talked about. Batman was another one. But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn't want that," Hartnett recalled. "I didn't want to be labeled as Superman for the rest of my career. I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger."

In the end, Spider-Man went to Tobey Maguire, Batman to Christmas Bale, and Superman was but on the backburner until a recent reboot, starring Henry Cavill.

As for the advice that he'd give his younger self, today - Harnett said: "I would say, just keep doing it all and watch how interesting it becomes the more you get involved. But honestly, I don't know what I could tell that kid that he'd actually listen to me."

"If you're a ladies man, that's what you do with your life - always chasing. That's never been the case with me. I've always just wanted a relationship. Otherwise there's nothing. The scene can eat you up. It's eaten up enough of my life already."

Hartnett is about to star in a new Showtimes series called Penny Dreadful, with Eva Green and Billie Piper.
