Johnny Depp Flagging Big-Time as 'Transcendence' Takes $11 Million

Warner Bros' flagging star Johnny Depp will be desperate for one of his upcoming projects - Mortdecai, Into The Woods and Black Mass - to land big on the box-office after his latest sci-fi flick Transcendence took just $3.7 million on Saturday night. The movie is tracking for an $11 million opening.

The sci-fi thriller follows Will Caster (Depp), a researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence working to create a sentient machine that combined the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions.

It was wholeheartedly panned by critics, with Entertainment Weekly remarking, "The script by first-time screenwriter Jack Paglen is so full of half-explained cyber-nonsense and wheezy, kneejerk man-vs.-technology clichés, it borders on the ludicrous."

Elsewhere at the box office, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is expected to cross the $200 million this weekend, after taking around $10 million. Fox's Rio 2 took another $8 million on Saturday to take its total to $22.5 million, while Greg Kinnear's romantic-comedy Heaven is For Real added more for Sony/TriStar to take around $21 million overall. According to Deadline, that's a $12 million negative overall.

Transcendence, which boasts an outstanding looking cast including Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy and Paul Bettany, cost an estimated $100 million to make. It's the latest big-budget flop for Depp, who starred in Disney's The Lone Ranger, which lost tens of millions.

Elsewhere at the Easter box-office, Marlon Wayan's comedy-horror movie A Haunted House 2 took just $2.9 million for Open Road Films, with its weekend total tracking for somewhere around $8.8 million.
