Johnny Depp's 'Transcendence' Bombs On Opening Weekend

Johnny Depp’s new movie Transcendence has bombed, taking just $11.5 million on opening weekend. The movie, which cost an apparent $150 million to make, is Depp’s second box office bomb in a row. His 2013 Disney movie The Lone Ranger grossed just $89 million, making a catastrophic loss of $126 million.

Transcendence sees Depp cast as Dr. Will Caster, battling against an anti-technology organisation in their bid to stop him from creating an all-knowing machine with the ability to transcend human intelligence.

Reviews for Transcendence have been largely poor, Entertainment Weekly’s Chris Nashawaty wrote, “The script by first-time screenwriter Jack Paglen is so full of half-explained cyber-nonsense and wheezy, knee-jerk man-vs.-technology cliches, it borders on the ludicrous.” The film has received just a 19% rating on film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Depp has recently been plagued by a series of poorly received films. His stint as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean continued after Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom departed from the original franchise, and has now become his most recognised role, despite the poor reception of Pirates of the CaribbeanOn Stranger Tides in 2011.

Depp’s projects with Tim Burton have been no more successful. David Thomson from The New Republic described the only reason to see Dark Shadows being “to discover how dire and pointless-how flat-out dreadful-a movie can be even when it has Tim Burton, Johnny Depp…attached to its flimsy pretext.”

A P.S. for Chris Nashawaty...I suppose that "Spiderman, Iron Man, Captain America, et al..." isn't full of "...half-explained cyber-nonsense and wheezy, knee-jerk man-vs.-technology cliches..."...WOW...REALLY? And how many times have you written a script? You can barely write an intelligent review. Most everything is...or have you skipped a few years of films...hmmmm...What was his point again?

I enjoyed the film. It was refreshing to see something that was more cerebral than the usual Marvel comic book fare which caters to the teen mentality. It seems to be evident that it has stirred much speculation concerning technology across the nation. So why such a box office disaster? Has America "dumbed down" that tremendously? I guess it has, sadly. Not all films can be the super-hype we've been being fed for so long that I can scarce remember what a good film is. I loved Johnny's performance. Morgan Freemans' performance seemed pointless, so how is it Johnny is always bashed by the critics? Age...that's my take on it. He's still a beautiful, intelligent and talented actor. I guess this nation is more into surreal figures and computer graphics than real people. That alone speaks of the times we live in. We no-longer want entertainment...we want ridiculous, mindless entertainment. I believe that's referred to as disassociation. A symptom of a very separatist society. Big Brother has taken over while we were sleeping.
