Yorkville Endoscopy, the health clinic in New York City where comedienne Joan Rivers went into cardiac arrest in late August, and subsequently died, is planning to fix several deficiencies with its daily operations in order to remain open.

Rivers unexpectedly died aged 81 this past September

On August 28th, Rivers was hospitalized for going into cardiac and respiratory arrest after stopping breathing during a minor throat procedure at the clinic. Nearly a week after being placed into a medically induced coma, her grieving family decided to take her off a life support machine on September 4th, she passed away shortly after, aged 81.

TMZ reports, the clinic has filed plans to make several improvements after an investigation conducted by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service last month found several serious deficiencies with the way the late comedienne's fatal operation was carried out.

Among the new procedures the clinic will incorporate are stricter protocols for credential physicians and observers who are admitted into operating rooms, and the medical staff must now perform thorough assessments of patients before administering any sedative, such as Propofol.

The most crucial improvement may be that anaesthesiologists must check vital signs at least every 5 minutes for patients who are sedated, as the report carried out last month discovered the doctors treating Rivers "failed to identify deteriorating vital signs and provide timely intervention during the procedure."

Joan's daughter, Melissa Rivers, released a statement via her lawyer at the time the report was published that said she was "terribly disappointed to learn of the multiple failings on the part of medical personnel and the clinic," and she is "outraged by the misconduct and mismanagement now shown to have occurred before, during and after the procedure."

The clinic has until January 7th to implement these new procedures.
