With J.J Abrams off gallivanting around the universe of Sci-fi-ice-skating – that’s what we like to call ‘directing dangerously popular films’ – there opens up a spot for the next Star Trek movie, which, considering the popularity of Abrams’ first two, will exist.

Up steps Rupert Wyatt, the Planet of the Apes director who has received a priceless endorsement from Mr Abrams. "He's incredibly talented and we'd be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert. But there are things we're focusing on right now before the director, which is just sort of the fundamentals of where the story is gonna go,” said the director, who is set to produce on the third Trekkie adventure (HitFix)

"It's too early to talk about details but there have been a lot of really exciting ideas about what comes next. I plan to be involved in the story and producing the film and I feel very blessed to be involved at all," he added.

Star Trek into Darkness caused controversy with the diehard Trek fans, some of which labelled it the worst Star Trek film ever made, but overall it has to be considered a success. Financially, the box office was busy, and the critics liked it too, rating it slightly lower than the first reboot, but a solid effort nonetheless.

Abrams is wrapping his head round a Star Wars reboot, which currently has no confirmed actors and a British shooting location – something Abrams isn’t happy with – and a host of blockbusters, including a new Avengers movie and the recently announced Jurassic World, to contend with in 2015.
