It is reported that Jennifer Lopez is on the verge of signing up for a residency in Las Vegas. According to TMZ, the 45 year old star will be agreeing to a deal to perform at the Axis theatre at Planet Hollywood, which is incidentally the same venue in which Britney Spears is currently performing. Per show, Lopez is apparently being offered $350,000 per show, three times a week for a 24 week period over one or two years.

Jennifer Lopez is rumoured to be signing a deal for a lucrative residency at Las Vegas

The Bronx-born star, who has sold over 80 million albums worldwide and has starred in several dozen movies, is also preparing for the fourteen season of ‘American Idol’ in January 2015. Earlier this year, she finalised her divorce from ex-husband Marc Anthony, with whom she had twins six years ago. She also recorded the official theme song of the FIFA World Cup earlier this year ‘We Are One’ along with Pitbull and Claudia Leitte.

While residencies in Las Vegas are extremely lucrative for pop stars, it often represents the shift from one phase of their career to another. It usually signifies that they’re over the hill in terms of making new music, and are now content to rest on their laurels and recycle their greatest hits. Cher, Shania Twain, Tom Jones, James Brown, Elvis Presley… it represents a graceful twilight to hit-studded careers. Granted, Elvis still made the odd fantastic single during his time in Sin City, but those exceptions are very few and far between.

Still, Lopez is unlikely to care. If the reported figures are correct, she will earn a whopping $26 million over the course of her contract. That’s enormous, yes, but still not as much as Celine Dion, who performs 70 times a year and receives over $33 million. That’s a lot for the Titanic theme tune and… what else exactly?
