If the power of Reddit ever needed justifying – and just to be clear: it didn’t – the recently-qualified Jamaican bobsleigh team received around $30,000 in donations via the online currency, Dogecoin.

Dogecoin is a legitimate currency, and can be traded for U.S dollars or another online currency, the more famous BitCoin. The campaign was started on Reddit under the ‘subreddit’, r/dogecoin.

“The Dogecoin Foundation is launching an initiative to get the Jamaican bobsled team to the Sochi winter Olympics,” read the post. “This is a great opportunity to promote dogecoin on the world stage. We also need your help to bring the team's awareness to the fund by getting in contact with them via facebook, twitter, email, or anything else you might try.”

Not long after the campaign started – in fact, it happened on the same day - $30,000 was donated, which is over 26 million Dogecoin under the current exchange rate. And due to the transient nature of the Dogecoin, the money was transferred to the more stable Bitcoin, of which they now have 35 - $30k. They’ll need around $40k more if they’re to make it to the winter Olympics in Russia though, which shouldn’t be too hard, right?

If they’re are able to make their way to Russia, it would be Jamaica's first Olympic appearance in the bobsleigh since 2002. "In truth, we still don't really know at the moment if we'd even have enough funds or sponsorship to fly to Sochi itself for the Games itself," Watts told the Daily Telegraph recently.

"It all depends. Our families need to be taken care of first. If there's no funding, who knows? But I'm one of life's optimists," he added. "Hopefully, the Jamaican Olympic Association will step in and support us now that we've qualified."
