Just 13 months after his smash-hit debut album, Jake Bugg is back with a new record - the Rick Rubin produced Shangri-La.Recorded in the Malibu studio from which it takes its name - a place favoured by Lady Gaga - things have clearly been a little different for Bugg's second outing.

Bugg - dubbed the new Noel Gallagher by the lazier critics - lost out on the Mercury Music Prize to dub-step artist James Blake, though he's not much of a fan.

"I didn't particularly enjoy his performance at the Mercury Awards," he told the BBC, "But I could see that he's talented. I was quite pleased that I didn't win the Mercury because I was quite drunk and I didn't want to go on that stage and make a speech, to be honest."

The Nottingham man's shtick has always been that he's a genuine alternative to the rubbish pop churned out by the X-Factor acts, though it's no secret that he's co-written songs with the likes of Matt Prime, who's also responsible for penning hits for Victoria Beckham, Kylie Minogue, Olly Murs, Liberty X and Will Young.

This time around the young songwriter shares writing credits with the likes of Snow Patrol's Iain Archer and Crispin Hunt of The Longpigs.

Reviews of Shangri-La have been mixed, with The Guardian's chief rock critic Alexis Petridis writing, "Shangri-La bears out Bugg's insistence that he's "just a lad who writes tunes" a little too clearly: it sounds as ordinary as he claims to be."

The Independent's Emily Mackay wrote, "Bugg's voice is often irritatingly nasal and whiny. Of course, it never stopped Dylan, but then Dylan had Dylan's songs." Ouch.

Still, reviews don't appear to worry Bugg, who explained, "Of course I was worried about it because I wanted to maintain everything that I've achieved," he says of the new album, Shangri-La.

"But I managed to drift away from worrying about it and just carried on doing what I do, which is write the songs. And fortunately the songs came. I didn't really plan on it coming this quick but I'm very happy that the songs came like they did."

Jake Bugg's Shangri-La is released in the UK on Monday (November 18, 2013).
