Bad News: No More Luther on TV. Good News: Luther Movie!
Finally, after three seasons, Luther is hitting cinemas
Anyone who enjoys curling up on the sofa in front of the BBC’s Luther will be disappointed; you’ll have to put some clothes on and head to the cinema to see Idris Elba’s next incarnation as the maverick cop, as a Luther movie is in production. You can always wait for it to come out on DVD, but then you’d miss Elba’s smooth head on the big screen, the decisions being made inside it, etc. etc.
Idris Elba ponders some hard decisions in the TV version of Luther
Neil Cross revealed the movie’s progress talking to the Edinburgh Television Festival. "I've written the script and we hope to get the film made next year," he said. "Idris is a brilliant leading man and we've hoped to turn Luther into a movie for a long time. It will follow his career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe, and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series." (BBC)
The incredibly popular BBC crime drama sees Luther bend the rules frequently to catch whichever psychopath is terrorizing the people of London. Elba made his name acting on the other side of the law as Stringer Bell in HBO’s The Wire before becoming an international movie star. Now he’s set to take another fantastic TV character and move it into the big screen.
How will Luther translate to the big screen?
"If we do decide to make this film, the spine of the film will probably come from The Calling - which is the book - and that starts at the beginning of who Luther is and where he's come from," said the actor.“[The movie is] a goal, it's a goal for Neil and I, for sure - we've talked about it at length," he said. "We haven't got into any sort of deal stage or anything like that, but it's certainly a goal.
"We did six episodes [on television], then we did four, then we waited a year and a half and then we did another four. That's training our fans to gear up towards what could be either a film or maybe a television special and then a film. (Digital Spy)
