Anticipation for season 3 is high following the unexpected and often bizarre events of season 2, when major character Zoe Barnes was killed off. It concluded with Mr Underwood double-crossing his own President and taking control of the Oval Office. As with previous episodes, all of season 3 will be available from February 27.

Gilroy's brother Dan recently directed the disturbing drama Nightcrawler, featuring a career best performance by Jake Gyllenhaal.

The announcement comes just a month after the death of House of Cards actress Elizabeth Norment, 61, who played Underwood's executive secretary Nancy Kaufberger. The popular actress lost her battle with cancer.

Writing on his Twitter page at the time, Spacey wrote: "RIP Elizabeth Norment. We all loved her and she leaves a void in all of us here at HoC's."
