Joaquin Phoenix's Relationship With Philip Seymour Hoffman Develops in Spoof 'Her' Trailer

Remember when we told you about the Fight Club minus Tyler Durden scene lovingly brought to the world by editor/magician Richard Trammell? Well he’s at again, this time with Spike Jonez’s Oscar-nominated ‘Her’, although this time the sultry tones of Scarlett Johansson are replaced with the rather stark cadence of Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

HerJoaquin Phoenix falls in love with his OS in 'Her'

The trailer sees Theodor – played by Phoenix – fall in love with his new and scarily innovate OS Samantha, but Samantha is now an incredibly offensive, sandy-haired man in his mid-40s.

Spoiler coming up...

Not that Theodor minds; he’s pretty content with his new lot, hugging Amy Adams in celebration of his new-found, if not controversial relationship. Hell, if you’ve watched the film, you’ll know Adams’s character – called Amy, funnily enough - is at it too.

Hilarious spoof trailer aside, ‘Her’ is actually a brilliantly poignant depiction of a not-so-distant future. Jonez’s poetic portrayal of a life dominated by new technologies manifests in a sun-drenched city populated by self-involved, emotionally terrified individuals who have the capacity to fall in love with an operating system.

Seymour-Hoffman and Phoenix enjoyed the screen together in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, one of 2012’s most controversial and brilliant films. The pair’s relationship – as mentor to student – was electrifying on-screen and result in Best and Supporting Actor nominations for the 2013 Oscars, despite Joaquin’s frank words on The Academy.

‘Her’ is up for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, but it’ll be a huge surprise if it wins. Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave leads the pack, while The Dallas Buyers Club and The Wolf of Wall Street provide strong competition, not the mention the brilliant Nebraska, starring Bruce Dern.
