Filmmaker Clive Barker has announced that he intends to revive his 1987 horror directorial debut, Hellraiser, with Doug Bradley reprising his role as the signature villain Pinhead.

"Today I have officially been invited to write the script." Barker wrote on his Facebook page. "What can I tell you about it? Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER."

"Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley, and much to my delight Bob Weinstein agreed," he added.

Naturally, the announcement has sparked a great deal of excitement amongst fans of the iconic horror movie. Bradley's Pinhead character, a bald man dressed in black with hundreds of nails sticking out of his face is instantly recognisable even to those who haven't seen the film.

Regularly appearing on '100 best horror movie' countdown lists, the film and its brand of sadomasochistic horror is still as effective today as it was 26 years ago. A surreal and grotesque film, Hellraiser was made without the influence of digital effects or CGI, meaning the gory violence is that bit more intense as a result. Barker's original movie was inspired by his own novella, The Hellbound Heart, which has inspired numerous sequels.

Though there's been a rumored remake in the works for years, this is the first sign from Barker that the gears are in motion to bring the film into the 21st century and back to terrorise our screens.

Barker's tale depicts the story of a man and wife, Larry and Julia, who move into an old house and discover the half-life remains of Larry's brother Frank who was torn apart after he solves a puzzle he bought abroad, which opens a doorway to hell.

It emerges that Frank is Julia's ex-lover and she seeks to restore him to human form. Her acts invoke the fury of the Cenobites, a cross between angels and demons, led by the terrifying Pinhead who arrive to claim her.

According to the LA Times, Barker is set to appear in person on Saturday to discuss another of his film, Nightbreed, at the American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and may answer queries about his Hellraiser remake.
