HBO's Emmy Winning 'The Newsroom' To Wrap After Season Three: Why So Soon?
Aaron Sorkin's political drama prepares to sign off for good.
The Newsroom will come to an end after the finale of the upcoming third season, which is set to air this autumn, according to HBO, via Digital Spy. The network confirmed that the political drama would return for a third and final outing after actor Jeff Daniels first tweeted the news back in September.
Jeff Daniels Won An Emmy For His 'Newsroom' Anchor.
HBO president Michael Lombardo said in a statement: "The Newsroom is classic Aaron Sorkin - smart, riveting and thought-provoking," adding "I'm sure this farewell season will be one to remember," he added. Production for the third season is apparently underway and is expected to premiere this coming autumn.
Was Aaron Sorkin's Busy Schedule The Main Reason For Cancelling 'The Newsroom'?
The news that The Newsroom will be coming to a prompt finish comes despite the spotlight that September's Emmy Awards cast on the show when Jeff Daniels, who plays News Night anchor Will McAvoy, triumphed with the award for best drama actor.
It has been suggested that a contributing factor to The Newsroom's wrap is Aaron Sorkin's busy schedule, the show's creator who has apparently been in negotiations with the network for months. Variety has confirmed that Sorkin has turned in a script for Sony's Steve Jobs biopic, which he wrote in Spring 2012 and perhaps will hope to capitalise on the negative reviews of recent Ashton Kutcher Jobs biopic.
Emily Mortimer Leads The Talented Cast Of 'The Newsroom.'
Having premiered in June 2012, the drama stands apart from other similar concepts because it uses real-life news stories interwoven with storylines involving the fictional news team. This unique premise, combined with a killer cast of Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Jane Fonda, John Gallagher and Alison Pill, the show was soon well-placed to pick up a host of nominations at such prestigious ceremonies as the Golden Globes, the Screen Agctoirs Guild, the Emmys and the Critics' Choice.
The cancellation news also coincides with that of another critically acclaimed HBO drama, Boardwalk Empire, which has recently been announced to be drawing to a close after its fifth season.
