Gwyneth Paltrow and her ex-husband, Chris Martin, got the world talking when they decided to 'consciously uncouple' last year and not just because the Hollywood and musical dream team had divorced but because of the strange term that had chosen to call it.

And it seems that it wasn't only the world that raised an eyebrow in confusion at the phrase with Gwyneth's famous mother, Blythe Danner, recently revealing that she wasn't sure what to make of the term either.

Promoting her new film, I'll See You In My Dreams, at its Sundance Festival premiere, the 71-year-old actress told the New York Post: "People make fun of this, um, what do they call it? What is that thing that they've been doing? Separating but being?"

But for Blythe the phrase that her daughter and Coldplay's front man used to officially separate was clearly not the most important thing about their break-up and she actively praised how they have both handled the spilt.

She said: "They are so smart...both incredibly brilliant. They're making it work, they're great friends and the kids are in wonderful shape."

Blythe was married to Gwyneth's father, Bruce Paltrow, for 33 years until his death in 2002, an event which devastated Gwyneth and which, it is widely believed, that Chris Martin wrote Coldplay’s song Fix You about.
