GoldieBlox Removes Beastie Boys Song From Video To Avoid More Legal Disputes

GoldieBlox has withdrawn the Beastie Boys song from their viral video to avoid a legal battle with the band. The Californian toy company, used their song 'Girls', with different lyrics, in a viral advertising video which showed three girls playing Rube Goldberg-inspired machine.

The lyrics were changed to demonstrate a message of empowerment but The Beastie Boys did not want any of their songs been used for advertising, GoldieBox filed a lawsuit claiming fair use but have now pulled the plug on the video.

GoldieBlox CEO Debbie Sterling wrote an open letter to the surviving members of the group and posted in on the company's website on Wednesday (Nov 27th).

"We don't want to fight with you. We love you and we are actually huge fans," she wrote.

Sterling claims the video was made "with the best intentions" and "wanted to transform it into a powerful anthem for girls."

"We were completely unaware that the late, great Adam Yauch had requested in his will that the Beastie Boys songs never be used in advertising," she continued. "Although we believe our parody video falls under fair use, we would like to respect his wishes and yours."

"Since actions speak louder than words, we have already removed the song from our video," the song has already been removed from video sharing site YouTube.

The Beastie Boys wrote an open letter to GoldieBlox on Monday (Nov 25th) following the toy company's lawsuit, they said they were "impressed by the creativity and the message" but as a band "long ago, we made a conscious decision not to permit our music and/or name to be used in product ads."

The company has made a new video with a backing theme song that contains no lyrics, problem solved!
