Performed by the Young Vic, the play will be directed by Benedict Andrews who is known for having had great success with Chekhov's Three Sisters at the Young Vic in 2012. The X Files actress began her career in theatre before she found fame on the small and big screens, however Streetcar will mark her first major return to the theatre for some years. Fresh from her acclaimed BBC2 thriller, The Fall,

Anderson will tread the boards as Blanche, following in the footsteps of actresses Rachel Weisz and Glenn Close who have also done so, with Weisz even winning an Olivier award for her performance.

In addition to Streetcar, the Young Vic have also announced a fresh season of plays that includes Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, Samuel Beckett's Happy Days and Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge, marking an exciting series of performances ahead.

Written in 1947, A Streetcar Named Desire received the Pulitzer Prize in 1948 after it opened on the Broadway stage. Blanche takes centre stage as a fading southern belle in the French quarter of World War II New Orleans and was most famously portrayed by 20th century screen starlet Vivian Leigh who played the role both on stage and in the 1951 movie adaptation.
