Gareth Malone Reckons Modern Pop Stars Are Cheating With Autotune Antics

Hang on, someone doesn’t like manufactured pop music and thinks the likes of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are a bit fake and rubbish? Jesus Christ we’ve got a visionary on our hands. He’s called Gareth Malone.

The television presenter, who hosts The Choir, told Richard Bacon on BBC Radio 5 Live that using autotune is cheating, and that his band of trilling choir members are miles ahead of even the biggest pop stars.

“It absolutely is cheating,” he said of the auto-tune technology. “My issue with it is it doesn’t tend to happen in classical music, so we’re not really on a level playing field because we play young kids music that’s compressed,” he added, via The Telegraph.

“That’s done take after take after take and that’s electronically lifted and auto-tuned and then you play them a choir singing live, I mean genuinely doing it – I don’t think the two can compete on record.”

The 37-year old doesn’t just think autotune is cheating, but he’s rather sad it exists. He added: “I think all that production takes away from the natural beauty of the voice or the sonorous quality of an instrument.”

Daft Punk agree - autotune is ruining music.

Malone also risked incurring the wrath of every teenage girl with an internet connection when he moved onto One Direction, but at least he admitted they could sing. Saying that 1D probably have “enormous team of people helping them get their singles together,” Malone said: “Whether they’ve got staying power and whether they’ve got the musical longevity, only time will tell.”

So does Michael Buble.

The new series of The Choir aired last night on the BBC, and will be available on iPlayer now (Nov 5, 2013).
