'Frozen' Soundtrack Maintains Vice-Like Grip on Billboard 200

The soundtrack for Disney's smash-hit movie Frozen has continued its strong run at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, selling 161,000 copies last week to bring its total to 1.8 million, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

Billboard said 1.5 million of the soundtrack sales were from 2014, making it this year's biggest selling album so far - by an absolute mile. Beyonce's self-titled album that she released in December is in second with 604,000.

Frozen - about two Nordic princess sisters who have to save their kingdom from a relentless winter - is now the top-grossing animated movie in box-office history after topping $1 billion in worldwide sales. It's soundtrack has been boosted by the phenomenal success of Idina Menzel's 'Let It Go' which won the Oscar for Best Song in March.

The soundtrack is only the 20th album to spend eight weeks at No.1, though it still languishes behind Adele's Grammy-winning record 21 that clocked 24 non-consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard 200. Whitney Houston's soundtrack for the 1993 movie The Bodyguard noticed 20 weeks at No.1.

Elsewhere in the chart, Shakira debuted at No.1 with her self-titled record, selling 84,000 copies. Johnny Cash's newly discovered album Out Among The Stars entered at No.3, while rockers Memphis May Fire came in at No.5.

Veteran Barry Manilow had to settle for No.8 with his latest album Night Songs, while My Chemical Romance - who split last year - released greatest hits compilation May Death Never Stop You, which entered at No.9

Overall, Billboard said album sales were down 28 per cent for the comparative week last year.
