The weird-and-wonderful world of ‘Frank’ was confronted by the critics in the last few days, and those critics responded with a wave of praise for Lenny Abrahamson’s quirky, indie comedy.

‘Frank’ tells the story of Jon (Domhnall Gleeson); a budding musician who finds himself in one of the weirdest bands ever, fronted and guided by the enigmatic Frank (Michael Fassbender in a Papier-mâché mask) and his frankly (sorry) terrifying sidekick Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

Initially, Frank’s ethos is admirable and appealing to Jo, but when the band head out into the wilderness to record a second album, his influence tells and the group have to ask themselves some serious questions. Serious in a funny, Michael Fassbender wears a mask throughout the film kind of way.

“The film plays with our assumptions about the mythology of the pop star. Gleeson's character is constantly looking for his inspiration, but he's never quite on the right wavelength,” wrote Henry Barnes of The Guardian in his 4-star review.

The rest of the critics followed suit, and ‘Frank’ has an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes because of that. “A faceless Michael Fassbender stars in this weird and wonderful musical comedy from director Lenny Abrahamson,” wrote Peter Debruge of Variety.

FrankThe critics have fallen in love with 'Frank'

“If you're willing to go with that - an affectionate character study of a bloke in a massive papier mache head - you'll find Frank to be a richly rewarding film, and the title character to be one you can't help but fall in love with,” said IGN’s Chris Tilly, while Amber Wilkinson of The Daily Telegraph called it: “Off-beat and punk-spirited, Sievey would no doubt approve of the tone and style of this movie.”
