Eydie Gorme, a popular television singer, died on Saturday (10th August) at the age of 84. She died of an undisclosed illness at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. Her death was announced by her publicist on Sunday.

Born in the Bronx, New York in 1928, Gorme began her music career in 1950, recording with the Tommy Tucker Orchestra and Don Brown. In 1953, she was invited to appear on The Tonight Show Starring Steve Allen. She appeared alongside singer Steve Lawrence, who later became her husband. 

The couple, bill as 'Eydie and Steve', appeared on the show throughout the 50s. Grome and Lawrence were extremely popular, not only singing but performing comedy sketches. 

Prior to her appearance on the show, Eydie was a successful band singer and nightclub entertainer. She also had own her successful music career, her most famous hit being the 1963 'Blame it on the Bossa Nova'.

She continued performing with her husband and they appeared on numerous occasions in Las Vegas. Lawrence issued a statement to the press on the death of his wife. It reads: ""Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing. While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time."

Lawrence continues to perform whilst Gorme only retired in 2009 at the age of 80, after an impressive and long lasting career. Gorme is survived by her husband Steve and their son David.
