That Eric Cantona Kronenbourg Advert? Yeah, It's Been Banned

While Eric Cantona is no stranger to being banned, his latest is not really his fault. The advert in which he stars – one for Kronenbourg 1664 – has been pulled for misleading customers.

Eric CantonaEric Cantona's parody ad is not cool

The misleading part comes from the assertion within the advert that the beer is brewed in a particular French town, Alsace. But it’s not: it’s brewed in the rainy British city of Manchester. Which isn’t quite as glamorous. The ad sees Cantona parody the treatment footballers get, from fan adulation to superstar treatment in various establishments.

“Here in Alsace, things are a little bit different. The hop farmers are treated like the footballers of Britain,” says the former Manchester United player. “They are idolised and adored. And why not? They are living legends. They are the men that grow the noble hops that make Kronenbourg the taste supreme ...”

The beer is so good, people hold the hop farmers responsible for it on pedestals, like celebrities. This culminates in Cantona denying his footballing stardom, preferring to be known as a farmer himself.

Thing is, you can’t have fun with adverts, especially if you’re sort of lying to the people watching them. And the location of the beer’s brewing origins have seen the ad banned.

Cantona was famously banned for kicking a fan in 1995. He didn’t just kick him: he kung-fu kicked him and punched him loads of times in the face, something Cantona thinks was one of the best moments of his career.

“When I did the kung-fu kick on the hooligan, because these kind of people don't have to be at the game,' he said. “I think maybe it's like a dream for some, you know sometimes to kick these kind of people. So I did it for them. So they are happy. It's a kind of freedom for them,” he added in an interview back in 2011.

“So I speak about that because maybe they felt it. Because they felt something special physically. Maybe it was a different feeling. It's a great feeling, but different.”

Cantona’s influence recently found itself in Shia LaBeouf’s consciousness, as the controversial star quoted his famous ‘Trawler’ line at the press conference for his film, Nymphomaniac, in Berlin. He then stormed out.
