TV veteran Efrem Zimbalist Jr., best known for his work on the long-running detective drama The F.B.I., has passed away at age 95. Hollywood.com reports that Zimbalist died of natural causes on Friday at his ranch in California. His passing was announced in a statement by two of his children, Stephanie and Efrem Zimbalist III, who wrote: ,"We are heartbroken to announce the passing into peace of our beloved father, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., today at his Solvang, Calif. (California) ranch. A devout Christian, he actively enjoyed his life to the last day, showering love on his extended family, playing golf, and visiting with close friends."

While today’s TV audiences might be less familiar with Zimbalist’s work, he became a household name by the mid-20th century with his role in 77 Sunset Strip, which ran for six years between 1958 and 1964. It was a trial run for his detective skills, as Zimbalist played private eye Stuart Bailey for the duration of the show.

On F.B.I. he upgraded to the role of Inspector Lewis Erskine for the duration of the show’s nine seasons. He ventured into movies with leading roles in The Chapman Report and Harlow before returning to television. He might be more familiar to modern audiences for voicing Alfred Pennyworth, the butler of Batman, in Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures in the 90s. Zimbalist’s final role was in 2008’s The Delivery.
