When you’re making a movie about murderers, no one really gets killed. When you’re making a movie about magic, no one’s really casting spells. And when you’re making a movie about alcohol, no one gets drunk. Hang on a minute; no, wait.

Anna Kendrick did. She got real drunk. But it wasn’t her fault, you see. “During a scene at the bar, they gave me fake beer, but then during a scene where I'm playing cards with Jake, they gave me real beer, and I didn't realize it!” she explained. “And so every time I lost, I was pounding beer, and I didn't realize it was real until halfway through the take. I was like, I'm super drunk right now!" (Huffington Post)

Being drunk at work generally isn’t cool, but if it can be forgiven at any point, surely it’s when you’re shooting a movie set at a brewery. “And so as soon as the take was over, I had to announce to everybody that I was drunk at work. I was horrified by the idea that I was going to be the next troublesome star who got drunk and started flipping over tables or whatever. I just tried to sit quietly until I sobered up,” she added.

The film’s leading lady – Olivia Wilde – she got drunk too, but she swears that’s not the only reason she doesn’t remember making some of it. “There are certain scenes I swear I don't remember shooting. Not because we were drinking too much beer - that was clearly part of it," she said "But because it was improvised it almost flows so much from your subconscious that you don't have time to judge what you're saying or doing." Romantic comedies – even ones with a twist like Drinking Buddies – have to be really good to garner strong reviews from the critics, so 77% on Rotten Tomatoes can be considered an excellent score. This is in no small part down to Jake M. Johnson, the New Girl star who stars in a hilarious turn as Luke.
