Barrymore is the cover girl of September's edition of Instyle magazine and in an interview with the magazine, she shared her feelings on motherhood. When asked how she felt about parenting she said, "I have anxieties about how much I'd like to get it right, making sure I provide her with an environment that's safe, nurturing, and loving." She continued by saying this environment should also be "consistent and grounding" and "silly and free".
Barrymore also compared her parenting style to that of her husband, Will Kopelman's, saying she acts "more like a chicken with its head cut off," in contrast with her "calm" husband.

In the interview she discussed the life lessons she had learnt and was able to reflect on now she is about to enter her forties. She believes "nothing comes for free. Life does not provide you with an easy ride." She elaborated by saying "you have to face really deep internal and sometimes external challenges," claiming that learning these lessons was "humbling," whilst also pointing out that such "obstacles" could be "ridiculous" too.
The 38-year-old mother plans to teach these life lessons to her child, in the hopes that Olive won't "fall down."
Olive may not remain a single child for long either, as Barrymore told the magazine she is open to the idea of having more children. On this matter, she said "I was an only child, and it was lonely. Some people love it and thrive on the independence, but I want my kids to have other kids around." She suggested the possibility of having at least another child so that "they can run around life together."
