First Day on The New Job: Peter Capaldi Starts Filming Dr. Who

New Years Day was the busiest day of the year for the BBC iPlayer service, with the majority of the nation engaging in what’s widely known as ‘a duvet day’. Basically, hung-over people watched Dr. Who. That’s what happened. It was a pretty monumental episode, too, with Peter Capaldi coming into to replace the now-departed Matt Smith.

And, like everyone else, Capaldi had to go back to work this week; unlike everyone else, he was filming his first full episode of Dr. Who. With 10.2 million tuning in on Christmas Day, the return of The Doctor highly is anticipated.

The former Thick of It star turned a few heads with his appointment as the Doctor, with the general consensus being: ‘oh yeah, that guy,’ or ‘cool’. Arriving on set in Cardiff to begin filming, Capaldi, said: “New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I'm emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.”

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, added: “First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins.” Ben Stephenson, Controller of Drama Commissioning, said: "Excitement and anticipation fills the air as Peter Capaldi’s Doctor takes control of the TARDIS for the very first time today. It’s going to be one hell of a ride and I can't wait for the journey to start."

Capaldi will be hoping that he doesn’t suffer any on-set injuries while filming Dr. Who. He managed to dislocate his thumb by getting it caught in a colleague’s costume while filming for The Musketeers. "Dislocated shoulders, bruised shins, the odd concussion. It's one of the occupational hazards of being a swashbuckler,” explained Capaldi of the incident.

"I myself suffered a nasty dislocated thumb, but embarrassingly not from swinging a sword around. Instead, my injury came from a domestic the cardinal was having with milady, Maimie McCoy.

"I threw her against the wall not realising I'd caught my thumb in her large frock. I felt a jab of pain. And when the director said 'cut' I looked down and saw my thumb was on the wrong way round. Nasty. Instinct took over and I shoved it back - which made my eyes water and my knees weak."

Now that’s the kind of Doctor we want protecting the universe.
