Don Jon: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Is The Don of Toronto With These Reviews

Irresistibly smug, Joseph Gordon Levitt manages to match his irksome smile with an abundance of talent. The guy who ‘girls wanna be with and guys wanna be’ actually plays the guy who ‘girls wanna be with and guys wanna be’ in Don Jon, and (by the way: damn you, Gordon Levitt) he’s pulled it off. Oh he wrote and directed it too? F*** you.

Joseph Gordon Levitt and Scarlett Johansson Can this girl change Don Jon's ways?

Jon Martello – or as his friends call him, Don Jon – is a serial man-about-town. He’s handsome, charming, and can lure any girl he wants, whenever he wants. All number of swearwords are popping into your head now, but bear with us; there’s a chink. See, Don Jon isn’t happier than when he’s at home watching pornography.

Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a good old-fashioned American girl – whatever that means – and is determined to find her knight in shining armour. Can she strip Jon of the Don and make things work? They’ll have to contend with a vast amount of false fantasies concocted by the media if they want to.

According to Film.com, the film is “Often light on its feet, bolstered by the reliable charms and writing chops of its leading man.” And The Guardian say “Don Jon's Addiction is a fun, occasionally flabby romp that should find its audience,” in their review. "Don Jon is an admirable directorial debut from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and cements his status as one of the most talented individuals in Hollywood,” write We Got This Covered.

Of course, during filming, Gordon-Levitt fell for the charms of the irrepressible Johansson, who is currently dividing critics with her starring role in Under The Skin. It seems the Batman actor developed somewhat of a crush on the femme fatal seductress. But she’s married, so you can’t have her.

“I didn’t know Scarlett, but I spent more than a year with the image of her in my head playing this character. She couldn’t not do this,” he explained. “Look, Scarlett is a gorgeous, gorgeous woman, but if you just compare purely physical features, plenty of girls are just as gorgeous. But she creates this extra something. It’s in her walk, her eye contact. The total package is just off the charts.”
