'Frozen' Is The Biggest Animated Movie Of All Time: Step Aside 'Toy Story 3'
Disney's latest animation has become the most successful to date.
Frozen has finally overtaken the sales of Toy Story 3 to become the highest grossing animated movie of all time. The Oscar-winning musical comedy dominated the box office over the winter period. The last big push for the film's release came as it opened in Japan this weekend - one of the world's largest and most influential film markets. The hugely popular Disney flick hit has since reached $1.072 billion in box office revenue, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
'Frozen' Has Finally Surpassed 'Toy Story 3' To Become The Biggest Animated Movie Of All Time.
Since Frozen's release late in 2013, it has made $398.4 million in the USA alone with an extra $674 million coming from other markets around the world. The movie's popularity was boosted by its chart-smashing soundtrack, strong presence on social media and awards success at high profile ceremonies including the Oscars, the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes.
The Movie's Success Has Been Boosted By Social Media & A Bunch Of Awards.
This month's Academy Awards saw the movie scoop up awards for both Best Animation and Best Soundtrack for the smash-hit ballad 'Let It Go.' Idina Menzel, who plays Princess Elsa in the charming musical, also performed onstage during the awards evening, cementing her movie's success with a dazzling rendition of the catchy tune.
All factors combined, Frozen can now boast the accolade of the biggest animated movie of all time after having surpassed Toy Story 3's former record of $1.063 billion. Not content with being a major hit with children, Frozen received rave reviews from scores of enamoured critics and impressed nods from parents who approved of the movie's messages of bravery, endurance and friendship.
The movie was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on the 18th March and has already shifted 3.2 million units, despite still being theatrically screened in many territories. Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, Frozen has become Disney Animation Studios' first ever billion dollar grossing title and the seventh from Disney.
Next on the conquest list for the formidable film is Batman sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, which took $1.084 billion worldwide. To surpass the Christian Bale action epic would not be unrealistic for Frozen as it still refuses to be shaken from the global box office top 20 even 19 weeks after its initial release last November.
