While some of us may not be ready to let Frozen go yet, Disney is at least moving forward, having just announced their 56th animated feature, Moana, will be coming in late 2016. The film's titular character looks set to give Disney lovers a new kick-ass heroine to root for, one who can not only sail the South Seas, but also battle mythical monsters!

Moana is being brought to the big screen by Ron Clements and John Musker, the talented pair who gave us classic such as Aladdin and The Little Mermaid.

In a statement released by Disney today, the studio gave a brief outline of what to expect from the film saying, “In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore."

Describing the newest member of the Disney family Musker added, “Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself. She’s the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences.”

Originally Moana was meant to be coming our way in 2018, but once Disney fans learnt that there was a new princess coming their way (and that she was a Polynesian sea-voyager), they simply couldn't wait. Yes the online response to the mere idea of Moana is said to have lead to the studio speeding up the developing process and fast tracking the film to 2016.

Speaking to the Huffington Post about the film's challenges, John Musker said, “We've got this story that's set 2000 years ago which we're building around a 14 year-old heroine. That's the youngest character Ron and I have ever built a film around. And while we want to do something that honors the culture of the South Seas, at the same time, we want to make a film that will work for people all around the world,"

"So is Moana is going to be challenging? Yes. But it's exciting to be challenged. If it were easy, why would we do this? Ron and I like a challenge. And this project -- while difficult -- has already been so rewarding. If only for all the amazing things that we learned on our research trips to the South Pacific.”

"We're a long way from the finish line. But we're already heavy, heavy into storyboarding and scripting and screenings," Ron Clements added. "And as these processes go along, I know that there'll be more announcements coming down the line in regards to various other aspects of this movie."
