Danny Boyle is doing TV again! There’s a cause for celebration. The renowned director behind Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire and, of course, the 2012 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, has just entered a contract with Channel 4 to create a series, centered around the decline of the British Empire and the dawn of modern India.

Danny Boyle, Critics' Circle
The acclaimed director has announced a new project - a series this time.

The project certainly sounds like one to watch out for, although few details have been released at this very early stage. An additional creative choice that should get a lot of people excited is that the series, entitled Babylon, will be written by the creative team of Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong. The two have some notable career highlights, including Peep Show and Fresh Meat, however they’re known mostly for their comedy work, so the new series might prove to be a challenge.

Danny Boyle, Empire Film Awards
Boyle's longstanding partnership with Channel 4 continues.

Boyle on the other hand, has a strong connection to Channel 4. His highly praised 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire was in fact produced by the company’s film division, Film4. The movie went on to win eight Oscars, including a Best Director win for Boyle. Trainspotting was also a Film4 production, way back in 1996. However, it has been a while since Danny Boyle last worked in television. Not counting the televised Olympic ceremonies, his last production for the small screen were two 2001 BBC films - Vacuuming Completely Nude In Paradise was written by playwright Jim Cartwright and starred Timothy Spall in the lead role. The second, Strumpet, also written by Cartwright, told the story of a poet named Strayman (Christopher Eccleston) who lived with a pack of stray dogs. In case his TV work isn’t your cup of tea, Boyle has also announced that he is working on a Trainspotting sequel, the BBC reports.

Danny Boyle, Shuffle Festival
Boyle has announced several new projects coming up.
