Nintendo were seriously threatened by Sega in the 1990's, as documented in 'Console Wars'.
If you’re a hardened gamer, then you’ll know that the current state of console gaming is predicated by a battle for supremacy between Nintendo and Sega in the late-80s and 90s.
If you’re not au fait with that part of history, then Console Wars will fill you in.
The book on which the film will be based hasn’t even been released yet – Console Wars by Blake J. Harris will be released in May.
But a press release from Atlantic Books –the company that bought the rights to the book in the U.K – reveals plans for a movie are already underway.
“Sony Pictures and Scott Rudin (Moneyball, The Social Network) are developing Console Wars as a feature film to be directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Knocked Up, Superbad). Rogen and Goldberg are also writing the screenplay. Harris is serving as Executive Producer, and is also co-directing a documentary on the same subject, with Rudin, Rogen and Goldberg producing as well.”
Tonally, Console Wars will be akin to The Social Network and Moneyball, two films that captured two socially significant moments in history and translated them – very successfully – to the big screen.
This is down to Scott Rudin’s involvement; the producer worked on both of those films and has developed an expertise in the very niche genre.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are set to direct. They wrote a foreword for the book, and have worked together on many successful projects, like Pineapple Express and This is The End. Rogen especially is famous for his love for videogames, and will inject a level of ‘fanyboyism’ into the upcoming movie.
