Good News, "Community" Fans! Season 6 Heading Your Way Courtesy Of Yahoo
Yahoo has announced a takeover of the series for 13 more episodes.
Yahoo!’s planned foray into long form digital content was met with some confusion when the appointed executive producers of the new projects Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) and Mike Tollin (Smallville) made the announcement at Digital Content NewFronts back in April. However, after a Community revival was announced as one of the first projects, viewers’ doubts seem to have been assuaged.
Yahoo had the show's devoted fanbase in mind, when acquiring the rights.
The deal was announced earlier this week, with creator Dan Harmon saying in a statement: . "I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online."
The show will likely retain its half-hour format, with stars Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jim Rash slated to return. However, season 6 will have a 13-episode run, like seasons 4 and 5.
One more year at Greendale Community College!
Yahoo chief marketing officer Kathy Savitt recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the reasons for reviving Community via the digital platform. Mostly it had to do with the creativity and originality of Dan Harmon’s story, as well as the devoted and highly involved fanbase – Community was cancelled on NBC after season three, but the network brought it back after an intense online campaign by fans. Most importantly, Savitt teased Yahoo’s plans for the show, which, given the right conditions, may extend beyond season 6.
