The Comedy Central app has been years in the making, and launches with a tonne of content to watch on iOS devices. But there are a few drawbacks, like the amount of shows that are stuck behind a pay wall, and some technical blocks that might put prospective customers off downloading it.

What’s more, the app is only available on iOS7 and above, putting many people out of the running, and doesn’t support Apple’s AirPlay function, which lets viewers connect their mobile device up to a television for sofa-based viewing.

But, essentially, Comedy Central are offering the chance to watch shows like The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and South Park for free on the platform, and selectively chose April Fool’s Day to announce the news, prompting many to believe consider it too good to be true. The final realisation that this is no joke only served to enhance hype.

“The Comedy Central app is a seamless extension of the brand that gives fans access to their favorite Comedy Central content instantly and anywhere,” network president Michele Ganeless said. “It is homescreen-worthy and an incredible platform for viewing and sharing our programming.”

Executive Steve Grimes told CNET: "We know that our fans, our core audience are young guys, young people. They want content on various devices. They don't differentiate between platforms." The new app comes in the light of Viacom’s increasing push of multi-platform content.

Bottom line: if you’re a fan of stuff like South Park then you’ll want this app, so you can watch things in bed. But if you’re a sub of the ‘TV Everywhere’ partnership, then you’ll get early episodes of the new season of ‘Inside Amy Schumer,’ ‘Tosh.0,’ ‘Broad City,’ ‘Workaholics,’ ‘Kroll Show,’ ‘Futurama,’ ‘Review,’ ‘Trip Tank,’ ‘Chappelle’s Show,’ Comedy Central stand-up series and specials and more.
