Sources told The Blade that Aiken, 35, has been making phone calls to key political figures to gauge whether he would have the necessary support to be elected.

One source said the singer is "actively considering" the run, and is "sounding and acting like a candidate."

Aiken came to fame with his performances on the second season of American Idol, which earned him a runner up spot. Since then, he has enjoyed a successful music career, selling over six million copies of his albums and performing on Broadway along the way.

While in the public eye, Aiken used his fame to send out a message of equality with regards to LGBT rights. A homosexual himself, the singer become an important voice as an activist.

He co-founded the National Inclusion Project, which aims to help disabled children, and he appeared at a Capitol Hill briefing in 2010 to urge lawmakers to pass anti-bullying legislation that protects LGBT students.

The seat he supposedly covets is currently held by Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers, who won her seat in 2010 with less than 1 percent of the vote in her district. She defeated Democrat Bob Etheridge, who had been in office since 1997.

NBC made a call to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee about Aiken's possible run, but this wasn’t returned, and Aiken's representatives have not yet responded to requests for comments. The filing deadline to participate in the primary is Feb. 28. North Carolina's primary will be held on May 6.
