What Should Cinema-Goers See This Weekend - Sci-Fi or Smut? Elysium Or Lovelace?

As the rain descends upon Britain – those fleeting weeks of sun a distant memory – spending the evening at the cinema with an over-priced box of popcorn and a drink that’ll go flat within seconds is a far better prospect than sitting in some park trying to cook a burger on a £2 portable BBQ.

But your cinema fun has a lot to do with what’s on that massive screen in front of you; what’s more, it’s up to you what that is. So check out this weekend’s best films and their reviews to get a taste of what to say when the box office assistant says “which film?”

For sci-fi fans, there’s only one choice really: Elysium. The Neill Blomkamp-directed epic starring Matt Damon tells the story of a dystopian earth, whereby the poor and under privileged live on a ruined planet, while the wealthy enjoy life up on Elysium, free of poverty or disease. Rotten Tomatoes: 69%

If you’re looking for a laugh, then We’re The Millers might be your best bet, although the talented cast – including Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudekis – seem to have fallen short of their potential. A small-time pot dealer gets mixed up in something way bigger than himself and sorts out a fake family to see him through. Just watch Breaking Bad. Rotten Tomatoes: 44%

The story of the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film is told in Lovelace, in which Amanda Seyfried portrays Linda Boreman, better known under the guise of the title of the film. A normal woman-turned-national voice for female empowerment who endured a tragic end. A brilliant story, poorly executed, say the critics. Rotten Tomatoes: 53%

The Kings of Summer is the choice for all you independent cinema buffs out there. This coming-of-age comedy features an idyllic setting as three friends decide to spend the summer in the woods, building a house and living off the land. Rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival precluding a strong critical response generally, making it a worthy candidate. Rotten Tomatoes: 76%

While Elysium didn’t live up to its potential – director Blomkamp built up a fantastic reputation with his breakthrough movie, District 9 – it’s probably still worth a watch, making it our choice for this weekend. For some cheap laughs, head to see We’re The Millers, and if you’re feeling something less Hollywood-y, check out The Kings of Summer. Our best advice: steer clear of Lovelace.
