More Bad PR: Cindy McCain's Response To Gwyneth Paltrow's War Comment
Was Gwyneth Paltrow's comment disrespectful? John McCain's wife weighs in.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s PR blunder is just getting worse and worse. After Paltrow was slammed by an actual green beret for comparing Twitter hate to being at war, Cindy McCain has taken aim at the actress, too. McCain, the wife of Senator John McCain, who is himself a decorated veteran, had this to say to Paltrow, in 140 characters or less:
Gweneth Paltrow is a joke. Her life is like taking bullets for a soldier. What a joke! My 2 sons serving in the military should talk to her.— Cindy McCain (@cindymccain) May 29, 2014
Paltrow made the offending comments at a tech event, Re/code’s Code Conference, where the list of guest speakers also included Microsoft C.E.O. Satya Nadella. “You come across [online comments] about yourself and about your friends, and it’s a very dehumanizing thing,” the actress said on stage. “It’s almost like how, in war, you go through this bloody, dehumanizing thing, and then something is defined out of it. My hope is, as we get out of it, we’ll reach the next level of conscience.”
McCain continued in another tweet:
Perhaps Gweneth Paltrow should go out on patrol with some soldiers. Kind of like a Red Carpet in her mind I guess!— Cindy McCain (@cindymccain) May 29, 2014
When it comes to tactlessness, Paltrow is an easy target. Her Goop website has taken off, but she has also been accused of failing to relate to non-movie star Americans. Her war comment, made just a day after Memorial Day, just feeds into the negative image.
But Paltrow has also been lauded for speaking out against online harassment and abuse against women in particular.
But after the recent backlash, Paltrow might want to consider the context next time.
Gwyneth Paltrow is yet to respond to any of her critics.
