Five people were shot and wounded during Chris Brown's performance at the San Jose's Fiesta nightclub in California. Brown himself tweeted that he was uninjured during the shooting though others were taken to hospital.

The R&B star was in San Jose to play at a "birthday bash" thrown by the San Francisco hip-hop station 106 KMEL. Local newspaper San Jose Mercury News reported that four people suffered gunshot wounds while another individual was admitted to hospital later. Police detained several people but no arrests were made and all those wounded are expected to survive.

In a video capturing the chaos, Brown is seen performing on-stage when suddenly the crowd's attention is diverted to the left where a large altercation breaks out. Gunshots ring out and the audience hits the ground before being evacuated from the club. The music cuts out and Brown's entourage usher the singer off-stage.

The shooting occurred just a short walk from a Rancho Drive home that was the site of a double shooting in September, which left a San Jose man and his son dead. Two men from Pittsburgh were arrested in that case.

Back in August last year, the Death Row Records executive Suge Knight was shot six times at a pre-MTV Video Music Awards party hosted by Brown in Los Angeles.

"This incident did not involve Chris; he was merely the host of the event. He has and will continue to cooperate with the investigation," Brown's representative clarified at the time.

The show in San Jose was intended to be a warm-up for Brown's huge North American tour that kicks off in Hampton, Virginia on January 27.
